Partnership Port Agreement concluded with SIPG
On November 30th, the Nagoya Port Authority and Shanghai International Port (Group) Co., Ltd. (SIPG) concluded a Partnership Port Agreement. This is an agreement concluded between growing Asian ports with the aim of expanding trade and port business through rapid communications and actions at the working level.
The Port of Shanghai was the world's No. 1 container handling port in 2010, and also the Port of Nagoya's No. 1 trading partner port for containers. The Port of Nagoya accepted trainees from the Port of Shanghai every year starting in 2000. Now, the Ports of Shanghai and Nagoya have reviewed the trainee program and concluded this new agreement to tighten the business focus framework to promote the benefit and relations between both ports.
The main points of the agreement are as follows:
- To exchange port related information and provide mutual support for sales activities in the harbor market.
- To develop exchange activities between both port-related communities and enhance the cooperative structure of port operations.
At the ceremony in Shanghai, Mr. Takashi Yamada (right), Executive Vice President of Nagoya Port Authority, and Mr. Chen Xuyuan, Chairman of SIPG, signed the Partnership Port Agreement.
Sydney Ports Seminar held to commemorate 1st anniversary of sister port agreement
To commemorate the 1st anniversary of the conclusion of a sister port agreement between Sydney Ports Corporation(SPC) and Nagoya Port Authority, the Sydney Ports Seminar was held on October 19th as a part of the Nagoya Port Users Reception.
Four special guests from SPC arrived in Nagoya for this occasion. At the Seminar, Mr. Takashi Yamada, Executive Vice President of Nagoya Port Authority, and Mr. Brian Smith, Chairman of SPC, both gave greeting speeches. Mr. Grant Gilfillan, Chief Executive Officer & Director of SPC, then made a presentation entitled "Sydney Ports: First Port, Future Port" that outlined the current status and future plans of Sydney ports. Over 600 attendees listened with great interest to the seminar.
60th Anniversary of Nagoya Port Authority
To mark the 60th Anniversary of Nagoya Port Authority, a Commemoration Ceremony and Seminar was take place on September 8th at the Nagoya Harbor Hall.
At the Commemoration Ceremony, "Recognizing our function of logistics base to the local economy and developing the port by responding to the public demand of friendly facility, security ensure and others" was announced by Mr. Hideaki Omura, Governor of Aichi Prefecture on the first day of his speech as President of Nagoya Port Authority. After the congratulatory speeches by guests of honor, the few side and movies that introduce the history of 60 years Nagoya Port Authority has overseen the development of the port.
After the Ceremony, the Seminar was held under the theme of "The new generation for the world container ports" by Mr. Satoshi Inoue, Professor of National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS). At the seminar, how Japanese container ports should enter into the structural reform within the management strategy inside the trend in direction of the world container ports was discussed. Many attendance was eagerly attentive to the seminar.
The Boeing 787 completed its first flight to Central Japan International Airport on July 10th
The Boeing 787 (Dream Liner), a next-generation mid-sized jet airliner that is partially manufactured at the Port of Nagoya, completed its first flight to Central Japan International Airport (Centrair) on July 10th.
This airliner is called "semi-domestically-produced" or "Made with Japan". Thirty-five percent of all its components, including the core components (wings and fuselage), are manufactured in the Chubu region.
Components manufactured in the Port area make the short trip to the airport by sea transport, and then transported by air to the finishing assembly plants in USA.
This "Sea & Air" transport mode is attracting attention as a model case for taking advantage of location with the short distance between sea and air Ports.The Dream Liner already had 835 units on order from all around the world as of April 2011, and is expected to activate the Chubu region's aircraft manufacturing industry.
Results of Selection of International Strategic Bulk Ports
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) has been proceeding with the selection of International Strategic Bulk Ports to ensure stable supplies of Resources, Energy and Food, thus enhancing competitiveness in cost and services relative to other major ports in Asia utilized by large vessels.
The Port of Nagoya now has been named as one of ten ports selected as an International Strategic Bulk Port (designated in the grain category).
The Nagoya Port Authority will be actively working on development programs, including creation of preparatory plans.Based on these programs, MLIT will support the development of quays capable of accommodating large vessels, storage facilities, and other infrastructure.
MLIT is also working to include the expenses of improvements under these programs in a budget appropriation request for FY 2012 and promote the development of facilities targeted for 2020.

Measurement of radiation in the atmosphere and radioactivity in the seawater at Port of Nagoya
Responding to the "Guideline on Radiation Measurement in Ports" which was announced from Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) on April 22, 2011, the Port of Nagoya measured the radioactivity in the seawater and radiation level in the atmosphere.
Regarding the measurement results, the radiation level remains unchanged from the normal level before the nuclear energy plant accident.

Countermeasure plan for Tohoku-Kanto Earthquake
Tohoku-Kanto Earthquake Task Force Committee created at Nagoya Port Authority
For the smooth support of reconstruction in earthquake-affected areas and economic activity, Nagoya Port Authority created an internal "Tohoku-Kanto Earthquake Task Force Committee" on March 24, 2011 to accurately assess and respond to the situation.
